SMART HOUSE (Version 1.0)
COPYRIGHT 1994 by Chatfield Software
Chatfield Software, Inc.
P.O. Box 115
Hiram, Ohio 44234
(216) 632-5447
SMART HOUSE is a DOS multimedia treasure hunt game for liter-
ate, educated adults. Get to the "prize room" and collect
a prize!
The 100 rooms in SMART HOUSE present questions and puzzles
involving science, art, literature, music, mathematics, history,
and many other areas (including pure guessing).
Your ordinary IBM-compatible PC plays music and speech through
its own speaker; view graphics, animations, and even short
"movies" without special multimedia hardware or software.
*****
MAKE A BACKUP COPY OF YOUR SMART HOUSE DISK!
Use "INSTALL" to copy all files to a directory on your hard disk
(default is "CSHOUSE"--but any other will do as well). Type and
enter the word "INSTALL" and follow the directions on your screen.
To run the program, type and enter the word "go" when you are in
the directory containing your SMART HOUSE files.
Do not try to run SMART HOUSE from a floppy disk. It runs
properly only from a hard disk.
We do not recommend running SMART HOUSE within MS WINDOWS (it
runs best when you exit Windows and run it from DOS).
WARNING WARNING WARNING!!!
DO NOT attempt to run SMART HOUSE in any way other than by
typing and entering the word "go"!
DO NOT play or experiment with any files in your SMART HOUSE
directory! Some of them can and will render the SMART HOUSE
program useless! (In which case you will have to delete all
SMART HOUSE files and begin again with a fresh copy of the
software.)
NOTE: None of the files in SMART HOUSE can damage other pro-
grams or the computer itself.
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
To run SMART HOUSE you need:
--a hard disk with 1 MB free space
--a color monitor with a graphics card
--an IBM-compatible computer faster then 8 Mhz
--(strongly recommended) a mouse
SMART HOUSE IS ASP SHAREWARE ("<ASP-U>")
SMART HOUSE is ASP shareware FULLY COMPLIANT with the guide-
lines of the Association of Shareware Professionals. The symbol
"<ASP-U>" means that there is NO DIFFERENCE between the trial
version and the registered version respecting completeness or
usability.
The final screen is regarded by Chatfield Software, Inc. as a
"sign-off," and not as a "reminder screen." It occurs in all
versions of SMART HOUSE, including the retail sales version.

USING SMART HOUSE
The object of the game is to enter the prize room and
collect the reward.
There are 100 rooms in SMART HOUSE, and you move from room
to room by making smart choices or smart guesses. It is
possible (but not at all likely) that you might win after
visiting about 25 rooms.
In each room you place the cursor and click on something.
Sometimes it's a door; sometimes it's a picture or an object;
sometimes it's a word or a part of a word.
Envision three main corridors. The prize is at the end of
the central corridor. Generally speaking, then, the central
corridor is the best place to be.
However--you never KNOW just where you are!
After the first few rooms you get an occasional hint: if you
are told how close you are to the "prize" (or "home") you can
be sure that you are in the central corridor.
The other two corridors are not horrible places to be.
Sometimes, in fact, a good choice JUMPS you from the left
or right corridors to an advanced location on the central
corridor.
The MAIN problem is that you can't save your place when you
exit! You have to rely on your ability to LEARN (and perhaps
on your skill in keeping notes on your travels).
Good news!!! There are TWO prizes!
First prize is $50 toward any Chatfield Software item.
Second prize is $25 toward any Chatfield Software item.
To get the first prize you will need to get a high
score on a special test you'll find in the prize room.
(You'll get AT LEAST a second prize at that point,
if you are registered and have proceeded legitimately.)
By the way...
When you enter the prize room, plan to stay there for
a few minutes if you want to take the test!

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Q: My program begins with a message "file not found."
Is that a problem?
A: No problem. It's just part of disk housekeeping.
Q: How does SMART HOUSE decide where to send me after
I answer a question?
A: If you give a "right" answer you will always be moved
to a better position. However (as is true in life
itself) sometimes a really stupid or even reckless
response causes a "lucky break"--and the user makes
a sudden fabulous leap. If you faithfully give the
best answer you'll always be okay.
Q: What does it mean if the program won't run for me?
A: It probably means that your files are damaged or
some files are missing! Check the list of files
in "VENDINFO.DIZ"; you should have all files.
If "SEAL.TXT" is missing, it means that someone
has used that "copy" of the program to proceed
through the test.
If files are missing or damaged it almost always
is the result of tampering. Delete all SMART HOUSE
files and re-install a fresh copy. (You can order
a fresh registered copy from Chatfield Software
for $25 of course--or get a new copy of the share-
ware disk from your shareware distributor (or down-
load it from your BBS). Here is where having a
backup of your program really pays off!
NOTE: Sometimes your program won't run if you are
using certain kinds of XT computer. You MUST have
a machine faster than 8 Mhz!
REGISTERED USERS: Phone 1-800-645-8806 for answers
to technical problems. (If we're not there, leave
your number--and we'll call you back.)
Q: How long is the prize offer good?
A: Though we reserve the right to change the rules
without notice, our plan is to honor the prize
offer indefinitely.
Annual upgrades of SMART HOUSE are planned. Regis-
tered users will be notified--and may upgrade for
the cost of postage and handling alone.
Q: How important are the three "passwords" mentioned in
several of the rooms?
A: Not knowing the passwords will not prohibit you
from using any SMART HOUSE features, including
the test. However, the very purpose of the test
is to restrict prizes to those users who have made
their way to the prize room by legitimately entering
and coping with many of the rooms. The test requires
a minimum score of 25%; knowing the passwords and the
answer to only one other question will get you a
score of 27%.
Q: My PC speaker is very small--and I can't hear some of
the sounds very well. Is that a problem?
A: Yes. Sorry. Some of the rooms absolutely require
that you hear the audios. Some notebook speakers
are simply inadequate in that respect. Try SMART
HOUSE on a different PC--or install a PC speaker
amplifier (we know of no software solution to this
problem).
